10 Website Terms Explained
When it comes to your website, you might feel like you need to learn another language just to communicate clearly about your needs and desires. You know how you want your website to look, but what about technical stuff? Here are 10 terms that will probably be used while talking to your Website Designer/Developer.
1. CMS
– It stands for Content Management System. It’s an application that supports the creation and modification of digital content – for example a website. WordPress is the most popular CMS today, almost a third of all websites in the world are made in WordPress. Installing WordPress is free and is done within minutes. 2. Domain
– The name your choose for your website. Example: www.jablanov.com – jablanov.com is a domain name. You can choose different extensions like .com, .net, .org, etc. Domain names usually range from about 10$ depending on the extension. Domain names can be purchased anywhere but it’s convenient to buy the domain and hosting from the same provider.
3. Hosting
– It is the business of housing, serving and maintaining files for one or more Websites.
Let’s simplify it – Think of a website like a house. All houses have two related parts: and address and a piece of land where the house sits. Websites work similarly. In this metaphor, web hosting is like the land where you build your house and your house address would be domain.

4. E-Commerce
– The practice of buying or selling physical or digital products and services online. It stands for Electronic Commerce.
5. Image Resolution
– The amount of detail an image has. Generally speaking, the higher your resolution, the better your images appear, and you can see more details. Whereas lower resolution images tend to appear blurry.
6. Brand
– Collection of concepts, ideas and emotions that encapsulate your company’s values. What makes a brand is a company logo combined with brand identity. This is a simple explanation. Of course, there is more to it like – customer service and client experience, story telling, etc.
7. Brand identity
– It is a distinct visual look that is associated with a company. When a brand identity really works, you should be able to recognize the brand even if you don’t see the logo. For example red plastic bottle with the right silhouette on a white background – first thing that comes to mind is Coca Cola.
8. Logotype
– A type of logo where the name of the company designed in a visual way. Think of brands like Google, Ikea, Disney, CNN, FedEx etc.
9. Call to action (CTA)
– It’s a text, banner, form or image on web page (or email) asking visitor to literally take an action – read more content, join an email list, buy a product, etc. CTAs is a marketing tool that helps you collect information about your users, send them promotional materials etc.
10. SEO
– Stands for Search Engine Optimization. To make it simple, I will explain it like this – When it comes to SEO, there’s you, the search engine, and the searcher. If you have an article about how to make vegan lasagna, you want the search engine (which, in 90% of all cases, is Google) to show it as a top result to anyone who searches for the phrase “vegan lasagna.”
